DPF Cleaning

Diesel vehicles produce a lot of soot which is then discarded into the air. Due to this, Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) need to be cleaned and maintained periodically to ensure this doesn't happen. By staying on top of this, you can avoid costly repairs and replacements.

Why is this important?

DPF's capture and store exhaust soot in order to reduce emissions from diesel cars. Once the DPF has reached its maximum capacity, it needs to be emptied. This is done by burning off the soot that is deposited in the filter, by reaching temperatures of 600°c.

If the DPF is removed from the vehicle, the owner could face a fine and risk invalidating the car insurance policy, as well as failing an MOT test (this was made a part of the test from 2014).

HOW TO TELL IF THE DPF IS BLOCKED?

Any faults with the DPF will be made known by an orange light appearing on the dashboard (refer to your vehicle handbook for a more specific image) Another tell-tale sign for a blocked DPF is black smoke coming from the exhaust, particularly when accelerating.
