HGV MOT testing

HGV Truck, Trailer & psv mot testing
Vehicles over 3,500kg will need to be tested under HGV MOT testing standards, either as a HGV motor vehicle, HGV trailer or PSV minibus/coach. This includes vehicles with more than 8 seats. Legal requirements for HGV's differ from standard cars/vans and therefore need a more complex MOT and will be higher in price.
A HGV MOT consists of several elements:
1. an external examination which includes the inspection of; lights, age of tyres, VIN, horn, security of the body and parts, fuel cap, seat belts, seats and windscreen
2. an exhaust smoke-meter test
3. a headlight alignment test (single biggest reason for failing an MOT test)
4. a shaker plate test of all steered axles, to check steering components and wheel bearings
5. an under-body inspection to check the condition of; brake components, exhaust, propshaft, loading valves, air leaks, fluid leaks, etc.
6. a Brake Roller test, checking the function, effort, bind and ovality of brake components
The team here at UK Truck & Plant Group are fully qualified IRTEC technicians who have been trained to DVSA-examined standards. You can rest assured that your MOT and preparations are being carried out to full DVSA standards.
Once the above is checked, we will inform you of any faults and then once you have agreed on the costs, we will conduct the repairs needed.
We won't try and catch you out with unnecessary work- we will always advise you of the legal limits/requirements and inform you if something needs urgent repairing/replacing, or if it may be needed further down the line.
We recommend you make yourself aware of the current UK testing standards and requirements to inform yourself of the HGV MOT standards.
If you're preparing your own vehicle for MOT, or using mobile HGV repair companies (where the facilities/tools required may not be accessible) there are guides to help you.
For an understanding on Brake Roller tests, this government guide will help make sure you're prepared.
We have a drive-through set of Brake Rollers at our workshop to help set up your vehicle and ensure it meets DVSA standards-whether to use for setting up your vehicle, after you have completed your own work or after replacing brake pads, discs or chambers.
